public commitment to sustainable development 2030
In 2025, Les Toits du Monde signed the 2030 Sustainable Tourism Pledge to demonstrate our commitment to improving our company’s sustainability performance between now and 2030.
With self-sufficient accommodations, accessible only on foot, lit by solar panels, and built by us using a large proportion of wood from our own forest, including a hobbit house insulated with straw bale and a Viking house insulated with wood fiber panels, sustainable development is at the heart of our mission and values. However, we are also aware that there is still much room for improvement, and that it is through small steps that we will make a difference.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”
Here are a few examples of how this translates to our experience:
- Our visitors can enjoy sleeping in an insulated straw bale house (our hobbit house – a Quebec technique from GREB) and find it incredibly comfortable!
- Our visitors consume an average of 10 to 20 liters of water per day, the same as someone living in sub-Saharan Africa, and they have everything they need.
- Our visitors have the opportunity to participate in workshops introducing them to edible wild plants or forest survival skills, hike to a magnificent viewpoint, or learn while having fun along our wildlife and flora interpretive trail.
- Our visitors leave their cars in the parking lot and must walk to their accommodations, accompanied by birdsong. They sometimes learn the hard way, while pulling their carts, that “too much stuff” isn’t always synonymous with “more comfort.”
- We measure our carbon footprint and find opportunities to reduce our emissions year after year.
- We support local businesses and the community by developing an improved sustainable and local purchasing policy.
- We support numerous local associations that bring life to the village of Nominingue.
